OSAKA – The Indonesia Pavilion at World Expo 2025 Osaka continues to celebrate the spirit of the archipelago's culture through the Rolling Exhibition of Batik Liem Ping Wie, which commenced on Monday, April 28, and the Cultural Performance featuring a fashion show held on Tuesday, April 29. By combining an exhibition of premium hand-drawn batik fabrics with an elegant fashion show, Batik Liem Ping Wie invites visitors of World Expo 2025 Osaka to experience the richness of Indonesian traditions evolving through modern innovations.

“I’m not just selling batik. I stand here as a cultural guardian. The world must know that our batik holds value and significance. This is part of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy,” said Marcelina, the fifth-generation owner of Batik Liem Ping Wie, during the opening of the Batik Liem Ping Wie Fashion Show at the Indonesia Pavilion on Tuesday, April 29.

As part of the cultural program at the Indonesia Pavilion, Batik Liem Ping Wie presents a series of activities illustrating the journey of batik from tradition to contemporary innovation. The Rolling Exhibition, running from April 28 to May 4, 2025, showcases an exclusive collection of high-quality hand-drawn batik fabrics, featuring a blend of classical and contemporary motifs that reflect the beauty of Indonesian culture. Among them are the Hokokai and Buketan motifs, which represent cultural fusion through detailed depictions of chrysanthemums, peonies, and roses, symbolizing beauty in diversity. The Buketan motif, inspired by natural flowers like roses and lotuses, also conveys elegance and femininity in Indonesian culture. The Pagi Sore motif draws attention by illustrating the duality of day and night within a single fabric, symbolizing balance and harmony in Javanese philosophy.

In addition to the Rolling Exhibition and Cultural Performance, Batik Liem Ping Wie will host a Business Forum titled “A Tapestry of Tradition and Tomorrow” at the Indonesia Pavilion on Friday, May 2, 2025. This forum aims to promote batik as an enduring cultural heritage of Indonesia. Visitors will also be invited to participate in a hands-on batik workshop with the Batik Liem Ping Wie team to understand the creative process from canting to natural dyeing.

Through its participation in World Expo 2025 Osaka, Batik Liem Ping Wie reaffirms its commitment to bringing batik as a symbol of Indonesian culture to the global stage, demonstrating that traditional fabrics can serve as an elegant and meaningful strategy for soft diplomacy. Director of the Indonesia Pavilion, Didik Darmanto, also stated that batik is not just fabric but an expression of culture and national identity. “Batik is a cultural heritage that captivates with every motif. It is a national identity that must be preserved and proudly showcased on the world stage,” he concluded.
