Osaka, Kansai, Japan, 9 April 2025 – Expo 2025, held under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," provides an ideal platform for Indonesia to showcase the synergy between its natural wealth, cultural knowledge, and technical advancements. The Indonesia Pavilion at Expo 2025 brings this vision to life through a seamless integration of nature, culture, and the future under the theme “Thriving in Harmony – Nature, Culture, Future,” which draws from Tri Hita Karana, a timeless Balinese philosophy that emphasizes harmony between human, nature, and the divine. The indigenous wisdom guides Indonesia to practice sustainability through a holistic approach which encourages mindful responsibility toward oneself, the community, and the Earth.

Rachmat Pambudy, the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, underlines, “Indonesia’s eighth participation at the World Expo, returning to Osaka in 2025 where it first debuted in 1970, highlights its enduring commitment to global collaboration and innovation. Indonesia’s presence then and now underscores its strategic vision to showcase its rich cultural heritage, economic resilience, and sustainable development goals. This journey reflects Indonesia’s growth as a vibrant nation that thrives in harmony with the global community, leveraging this prestigious platform to foster trade, investment, and international cooperation for a better future.”

From April 13 to October 13, 2025, the Pavilion invites global visitors to experience Indonesia’s rich heritage and forward-thinking innovations in Osaka, Kansai, Japan. More than a cultural showcase, the Pavilion reflects Indonesia’s enduring role as a crossroads of global exchange—home to ancient civilizations, vibrant trade networks, and cultural richness—while also standing as one of the world’s most compelling destinations for investment, collaboration, and innovation. With a dynamic population, abundant natural resources, and a strong commitment to green and inclusive development, Indonesia opens its doors to collaborations and meaningful partnerships—offering visitors not only an unforgettable experience, but also a gateway to opportunity.

A Journey Through Time and Space
Inspired by Indonesia’s deep-rooted maritime legacy, the Pavilion’s architectural masterpiece resembles a majestic ship, symbolizing the archipelago’s history as a seafaring nation and its voyage toward a sustainable future. Inside, each area offers a multisensory experience that blends tradition with technology, offering insights into Indonesia’s aspirations for its centennial independence. The highlight is presented through an immersive storytelling experience that takes visitors on a journey from the Earth’s depths to a panoramic view of Indonesia, culminating in the visualization of the Indonesia Emas 2045—a national vision for a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.

On the country’s commitment, the Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri states, “On this global stage, we proudly position Indonesia as a world-class destination for specialty travel, where ancient wisdom meets modern luxury. Our commitment is steadfast, to grow a tourism sector that uplifts local communities, preserves our natural heritage, and nurtures a thriving green economy.”

Bridging Economic and International Cooperation
Indonesia sees Expo 2025 as a pivotal platform to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and showcase its commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and global partnerships. With the Expo expected to attract over 28 million visitors and participation from 158 countries and 7 international organizations, Indonesia’s presence is strategically aligned with its long-term growth targets outlined in the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN).

“Indonesia's participation at Expo 2025 is more than just an exhibition; it represents Indonesia's vision of transformation. We are here to usher in a new chapter in global cooperation by providing investment opportunities that are not only financially profitable but also beneficial to society and the environment,” Leonardo Sambodo, Deputy for Food Affairs, Natural Resources, and Environment explained.

Building on the remarkable achievements of Expo 2020 Dubai, where Indonesia’s Pavilion welcomed 2.5 million visitors and secured US$2 billion in business transactions, Indonesia aims to attract 2.8 to 3.5 million visitors during the six-month event in Osaka. The Indonesia Pavilion is the result of a multi-year preparation process that began in 2022, reflecting long-term strategic planning and laying the groundwork for the Pavilion to serve as a dynamic bridge for investment, business, and cultural diplomacy.

Unlocking Opportunities in a Transforming Economy
In the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), Indonesia targets an economic growth rate of 8% of GDP. To achieve this ambitious goal, substantial development financing and investment are required to boost strategic sectors and accelerate infrastructure stock. The total financing need is estimated at IDR 10,303 trillion, equivalent to 6.7% of the cumulative GDP (current price) for 2025–2029, with approximately 30% (IDR 3,090.9 trillion) expected to come from private sector participation. This highlights the importance of strong collaboration and the need for strategic and innovative financing approaches that involve both public and private sources. With Expo 2025 providing a rare, high-impact platform to engage key decision-makers, Indonesia is ready to present its strategic projects to the world.

A dedicated space for productive discussions and strategic collaborations are provided, including a business center, VIP lounge, and private meeting rooms—all equipped with TVs to support impactful presentations. Over 40 business forums are proposed by ministries, institutions, regional governments, and private sectors to be hosted during the Expo period, aimed at accelerating collaboration and unlocking investment in:
● Human Capital Development: Indonesia–Japan collaboration in the workforce sector, technological innovation through the use of blockchain, and healthcare initiatives
● Economic Value-Add Initiatives: Renewable energy, food resilience, and domestic supply chain strengthening
● Strategic Infrastructure: Power plant, tramway, waste treatment, industrial park, hospitality and leisure
● Urban Development: New metropolitan areas, and smart cities
● Green Economy: Palm-based B100 fuels, waste management, and carbon trading
● Tourism & Creative Industries: Indonesia’s world-class destinations, eco-friendly fashion and architecture, aromatic oil, and traditional healing and wellness

Minister Widiyanti Putri further emphasizes, “More than just an exhibition, this is an open invitation to collaborate and unlock the full potential of Indonesia’s wellness tourism. Visitors will discover why Wonderful Indonesia is the future of mindful travel and begin their journey to the jewel of the equator."

Indonesia Aims To Surpass Economic Impact Achieved at Expo 2020 Dubai
Indonesia is positioning itself to capture high-value economic opportunities from Expo 2025 by aiming to surpass the investment and transaction momentum achieved during the Dubai World Expo, which reached $2 billion. This reflects the country’s strategic focus on leveraging global platforms to unlock stronger investment flows, elevate national branding, and drive sustainable economic transformation.

"Building on the success of previous international expos, we see strong potential for Indonesia to generate significant economic gains. With the momentum surrounding Osaka Expo 2025, we are confident this event will bring even greater benefits across key areas such as investment and trade, tourism, national branding, SDG achievement, and strengthened international cooperation,” said Fajarini Puntodewi, Director General of National Export Development, Ministry of Trade.

In line with this ambitious vision, the Indonesian government has partnered with key stakeholders—including Astra—to bolster the country’s participation in Expo 2025 and advance its sustainability goals globally. An Archipelago of Artists: Celebrating Indonesia’s Creative Spirit
A key highlight of the Pavilion is the powerful presence of renowned Indonesian contemporary artists whose work animates the Nature Zone. Among them: Indieguerillas, Nasirun, Nyoman Nuarta, Naufal Abshar, Mang Moel, and Arkiv Vilmansa. These artists reinterpret endangered native species—like the Sumatran Tiger, Javan Leopard, Orangutan, and Komodo Dragon—through distinctive artistic styles that speak to both tradition and futurism.

Through immersive experiences and artistic interpretations of endangered species, it showcases Indonesia's rich creativity, biodiversity, and sustainable vision for a thriving tomorrow,” Leonardo Sambodo added.

Visitors are invited to interact with these art pieces and access digital content that enriches the experience, offering deeper insight into both the species and the artistic process. It’s a celebration of Indonesia’s biodiversity and its deep connection with cultural expression.

In line with its broader sustainability goals, the Indonesian government also collaborates with Artha Graha Peduli, whose long-standing commitment to environmental and community development plays a crucial role in supporting Indonesia’s sustainability agenda. Through its management of the Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation, a 48,153-hectare forest and 14,089-hectare marine reserve in southern Sumatra, Artha Graha Peduli contributes to vital conservation efforts. Since 1996, Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation has focused on reforestation, wildlife conservation—including the rescue and rehabilitation of Sumatran tigers—and local community development, perfectly complementing the Indonesia Pavilion's mission to highlight innovation and progress in sustainable development.

Complementing these static artworks is a captivating cinematic experience titled “Nusantara Odyssey,” created by visual artists Isha Hening and Ign. Raditya Bramantya. Through immersive visuals, textures, and storytelling, it invites audiences to feel the rhythm of Indonesia’s landscapes, myths, and natural forces.

Afterwards, visitors can explore the Wajah Nusantara photography exhibition by Davy Linggar, a curated showcase of heirloom weaponry—traditional arms from various regions passed down through generations—and a video installation on Indonesian martial arts and traditional blacksmithing.

From here, visitors are invited to continue their journey through an exhibition that celebrates Indonesia’s rich textile heritage, courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism. The experience begins with a handwoven ikat by Obin who is widely regarded as a guardian of Indonesian textile heritage, and handwoven Tenun fabrics—created with natural dyes—displayed on sail-like structures inspired by traditional boats, anchored by a striking centerpiece in the form of a seven-sail Phinisi schooner. The textiles from across the archipelago, chosen from artisans trained by Cita Tenun Indonesia-—a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Indonesia’s traditional woven textiles through documentation, training, and collaborations—showcase the timeless craftsmanship of artisans whose skills have been passed down through generations. Reimagined with a modern, vibrant twist, these pieces blend tradition with contemporary design for everyday wear. As the exhibition evolves, new textile innovations such as eco-printed Batik may be introduced, weaving together stories of craftsmanship, tradition, and sustainability.

This area also leads into the 180-seat Theater, where a specially produced cinematic work by Titimangsa, an arts organization dedicated to preserving and promoting cultural heritage through innovative stage performances, in collaboration with Garin Nugroho, a renowned filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist known for his thought-provoking films that blend social commentary with rich cultural narratives, brings Indonesia’s cultural and natural narratives to life through enchanting visuals and refined storytelling inspired by Wayang Bali and the Tri Hita Karana philosophy.

Each material and spatial element is curated to reflect a specific cultural context: soft lighting simulating sunlight filtered through forest canopies, soundscapes evoking rainforest life, and design gestures that recall vernacular forms across the archipelago.

Craft, Performance & Design: The Living Traditions of Indonesia
The Culture Zone of the Pavilion brings to life the intangible heritage of Indonesia—through live demonstrations of traditional crafts and daily performances. Here, visitors will witness the meticulous making of Indonesian herbal medicine, traditional cosmetics, and weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations.

Performances of traditional dance and martial arts will take place regularly, showcasing Indonesia’s deep-rooted artistic disciplines and movement traditions. Each expression—whether through fabric, movement, or ritual—is presented not as a relic of the past, but as a living practice that continues to evolve in today’s Indonesia.

A Design That Tells a Story
Built on the principles of eco-friendly design, the pavilion ensures the efficient use of natural resources while minimizing environmental impact. A key innovation is the use of Plana wood, made from 60% rice husks residue, 30% recycled plastic waste, and 10% additives, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional wood. The structure also incorporates energy-efficient lighting and cooling systems to reduce carbon emissions, along with recycled and sustainable materials to minimize waste. Additionally, the pavilion harnesses renewable energy sources and optimizes daylight utilization, further enhancing its commitment to sustainability.

After Expo 2025, selected elements of the pavilion will be repurposed or relocated to serve as cultural and educational assets. Some components will be showcased at the Indonesian embassy in Japan, while others will be recycled or repurposed to ensure a legacy that lives beyond a six-month event.

Introducing Tumtum: A Friendly Face of Indonesia
Adding charm and accessibility to the Pavilion is Tumtum, the official pavilion mascot. It is inspired by the Batik Truntum motif, symbolizing enduring and ever-growing love. Tumtum is represented by three characters—Tumala, Tumbaya, and Tumasa—each embodying a key aspect of Indonesia’s identity. Tumala reflects Indonesia’s love for its environment (Nature), Tumbaya represents the harmony of its diverse people (Culture), and Tumasa signifies optimism for the Indonesia Emas 2045 aspirations (Future).

Culinary & Craft Experiences
No journey through Indonesia is complete without sampling one of the nation’s most famous culinary products. Visitors can visit the Pavilion’s restaurant, where curated menus offer a taste of Indonesia’s culinary heritage—featuring the world-renowned Mandheling and Toraja coffee offered by KAPPI. Meanwhile, the retail area will showcase handcrafted goods that reflect the diversity of Indonesia’s design scene—ranging from artisanal textiles to contemporary reinterpretations of traditional forms.
