At Expo 2025 Osaka, one of the most unexpected yet heartwarming highlights at the Indonesia Pavilion was a simple chant: “yoyaku nashi desu”, Japanese for “no reservation”. What started as a small, spontaneous moment has grown into something bigger than anyone expected.

A Gesture Born from Sincerity

It began with Pavilion staff, young liaison officers (LOs) from Indonesia, who greeted visitors in line with patience and a smile. Instead of simply repeating the phrase “no reservation,” they playfully sang “yoyaku nashi desu” with cheerful energy. There was no script, no rehearsal. It was pure sincerity, expressed in a joyful voice.

In Japan, the spirit of omotenashi—warm, thoughtful hospitality—is deeply valued. Yet, the Indonesian Pavilion added something unique, a more expressive, spontaneous warmth. “yoyaku nashi desu” became more than information. It became a performance of joy that resonated with visitors and left lasting impressions.

Beyond its literal meaning, “no reservation” carried a larger message, that everyone is welcome. The chant became a reflection of Indonesia’s inclusive spirit: open, inviting, and ready to embrace the world without conditions.

From a Small Chant to a Pavilion Identity

What began as a casual cheer in the waiting line soon transformed into a Pavilion signature. Visitors started looking forward to hearing it. The joyful chant even helped boost foot traffic, spreading through word of mouth and social media. The atmosphere of positivity became part of the Pavilion’s identity.

More than that, an unforgettable surprise emerged. A Japanese visitor created a song titled “Yoyakunashi” by editing the recorded voice of one of our Liaison Officers, and later shared it on Apple Music. With permission, the Pavilion began using the song to welcome more visitors. It became a symbol of cultural exchange and friendship, proof of how warmly Japanese audiences embraced the Indonesia Pavilion.

A Spirit That Continues to Shine

The story of “yoyaku nashi desu” reminds us that even the simplest, most spontaneous acts can grow into something powerful. It shows how creativity and sincerity from Indonesia’s young generation can make an impact on the world stage, through cultural diplomacy, hospitality, and genuine joy.
